GOYA – THE BLACK PAINTINGS

GOYA – THE BLACK PAINTINGS

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He’s considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He was also one of the great portraitists of his time.

Los pinturas negras (the black paintings) is a collection of 14 murals painted by Goya in the final home of his lifetime. He moved in at the age of 72 (in 1819) and the black paintings were finished in 1823. They were never intended for public display and represent themes personal to Goya. The black paintings were removed from Goya’s walls, after his death, and transferred onto canvas by the local authorities. 200 years later the black paintings are burdened by an official naming and description invented by the Spanish government rather than Goya himself.

Jack Dorsey censors governments too
Jack Dorsey censors governments too
In 2019, Twitter censored accounts in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Bangladesh and Spain in order to block the dissemination of "state-backed news." Also in 2019, Twitter began blocking institutional accounts, such as, in Venezuela for example, those of the Central Bank, the armed forces, the press office of the Presidency and that of the Ministry of Finance. In 2020, Twitter had sealed an agreement with the British government to combat "lies" (sic). Soon after, he took part in the US (...)

Mark Zuckerberg's company Facebook is already used to censoring governments. After closing French Army accounts in the Central African Republic and Mali in December 2020, plus those of the incumbent President of the United States in January 2021, Facebook has also just closed those of Ugandan president Museveni's team. The decision came a few days before the Ugandan presidential election in which President Yoweri Museveni was running for a second term, in an attempt to favour his adversary, (...)

Everything has an end, so do empires, both the United States and the Soviet Union. Washington has outrageously favoured a small camarilla of ultra-billionaires. Now it has to face its old demons, prepare for secession and civil war.

Coronavirus – latest updatesSee all our coronavirus coverage

Ministers are considering paying £500 to everyone in England who tests positive for Covid-19, in a dramatic overhaul of the self-isolation support scheme, the Guardian can reveal.

The proposed change is thought necessary because government polling found only 17% of people with symptoms are coming forward to get a test for fear a positive result could stop them from working.
